I have been Professor of Practical Philosophy at Philipps University Marburg since April 2025.

After studying economics, philosophy, and Romance languages and literatures, I came to Goethe University Frankfurt (JWGU), where I worked first as a research associate at the “The Formation of Normative Orders” Centre of Excellence and then as Assistant Professor in the “Political Theory and Philosophy” Department. I also earned my doctorate at JWGU in philosophy in 2009, with a dissertation on “Responsibility in Discourse”. In 2014, I was a visiting scholar at the LSE, and, in 2020 and 2021-22, Interim Professor of Practical Philosophy at the Universities of Mainz and Konstanz. In 2022, I was a Visiting Professor of Practical Philosophy at Freie Universität Berlin. In that same year, I also received my post-doctoral qualification (“Habilitation”) at Goethe University with a thesis on “Reason and Religion”. From 2023 to 2025, I was Professor of Practical Philosophy at the University of Wuppertal.

My research centres on political philosophy and moral and social philosophy. I focus on
questions of the theory of responsibility, tolerance, democracy, recognition, and a differentiated
understanding of reason. I am also interested in issues regarding the philosophy and critique of
religion.

Until December 2025, together with legal scholar Fruzsina Molnár-Gábor of Heidelberg
University, I led a network on “AI and Responsibility”. Funded by the German Research
Foundation (DFG), it included scholars in the fields of philosophy, law, sociology, theology, and
engineering. Together with Achim Hecker, I am leading another practice-oriented collaborative
project focusing on corporate responsibility.

My intellectual and historical areas of specialisation lie in the philosophy of various eras, ranging from the Early Modern and the Enlightenment to the twentieth century and the contemporary
period.
